Summary
The following article explains the Platinum Backup program (SXBackup) and how to set up a short-cut to run the backup at the press of a button.
More Information
Always remember ALL USERS must be out of Platinum and the user monitor screen cleared before any backup is done. If you are having problems with locked users, this article should help. |
Installing the Programme
The Backup program is now included with the standard Platinum installation and is installed or updated whenever you update Platinum.
Starting the Backup
A short-cut (icon) will be in your 'SXIcons' folder on your desktop, called 'Platinum Backup'. Double click this to start the backup process. The program will ask a question before starting the backup:
Choose Backup Drive
This question is asking you where you want the backup to go. We currently recommend a USB Pen Drive as a preferred method of backing up as they are cheap and easy to obtain and have adequate capacity. However any device with sufficient space that can be written to directly can be used. At this point you need to insert whatever media you are using.
"This Disk or device contains more than one type of file content - What do you want Windows to do?"
This window is headed with the drive letter of the external device, e.g. 'KINGSTON (X:)', in which case this is what needs to be entered in the "Select Backup Drive" box e.g. 'X:'.
The Backup program will now show a black and white screen showing the progress of backup creation.
When this box disappears the backup will begin copying to your chosen backup device and then a log of the backup operation will be displayed, noting any errors or warnings that may have occurred.
If you wish this process to be more automated, it is possible to schedule this using the Windows Task Scheduler. The help document stored in '<Platinum Installation Drive>\SX\SXBackup' called 'Usage.txt' will help with the commands that you will need.

Checking your Backup
Once the backup is complete, you should use Windows Explorer to check the details of the backup file created. The file will have been created on your external drive as above and in '<Platinum Installation Drive>\SX\SXBackup' and is called 'SXBACKUP.ZIP'. It should be dated either today if you have followed the instructions above or yesterday if you have scheduled it. You can also check the log file for the backup by going to '<Platinum Installation Drive>\SX\SXBackup\Logs' and opening the log file dated either today or yesterday and looking for any errors or issues.
